A Deeper Look into Edwardo Setien

A Deeper Look into Edwardo Setien

Eduardo Setien did not grow up knowing he wanted to become an artist. He graduated from school with a degree in accounting. His path to the arts began with a desire to write a book. There were many obstacles that came across writing and getting published. However, when Setien discovered painting, he fell in love and felt a freedom of expression. “The books need translation and many languages. Painting has a universal message with the need of translation.”

Setien is interested in human nature. So much so, that all themes are stemmed from this big idea. Many of his paintings are images of DNA strands from cancer. When asked about what made him interested in illustrating cancer, he stated it as “background noise that came up to the surface.” His interest in human nature has developed different concepts through his work, including humanoids—the future humans.

The most unique aspect of Setien’s art making process is from his Non-Forgeable work. These are pieces that are created from his fingers and hands. “Due to the fact that my fingerprints were imprinted in the surface of the artworks, and because no one else has the same fingerprints, I consider myself the first artist in history that will never be falsified or forged.” This brings on interesting ideas of appropriation and copyright issues. There are careers where people will analyze artwork to make sure they are the originals. Setien is aware that his work could be copied but there will never be a strand of doubt that the original was not created from him.
